Fishing

The Glacier Bay area has some of the greatest sport fishing in the world with trophy Halibut and five types of Salmon, all of this in one of the most magnificent settings known on the earth.

Halibut up to 350 pounds start migrating into the bay, from the Polar Ice Cap, in early May. Many of them stay all year around, but when the water turns cold, they go deep. As the schools of Herring arrive from the North, on the Southerly journey, and the water temperature warms, the Halibut fishing becomes phenomenal. Last year, Gustavus, had the shortest rod time in the state, for catching a keeper Halibut, and the fish size was the largest in the State of Alaska . Halibut is King in Glacier Bay . Every year for the past 10, the Halibut fishing has improved.

Beautiful King Salmon ready for the spring run are available in May and June. The fall run starts in mid August. The spring run Kings, can get to 60 lbs, with the fall run usually smaller, up to 35 lbs. In early July the remaining four types of Salmon start arriving in the bay, preparing for the annual trip up the more than 50 local river and streams. Pristine mountain lakes and streams provide the best possible spin tackle and fly fishing for Dolly Varden, Steelhead, Sockeye Salmon, Pink Salmon, Silver Salmon, and Chum Salmon. In all cases, the fish hit hard, and provide the angler with amazing action.

The inside waters of the bay are protected from the open sea by many islands of Southeast Alaska . This is beneficial to everyone, because, there are no ocean swells.
